From Covington Flats picnic area is located at the Lower Covington Flats turn around. The hile to Eureka Peak is 3.8 miles (6.2 km) one way.
There are a number of trails in the area and the Covington backcountry registration board is available for those wishing to backcountry camp.
Most everything here burned during either the 1996 or 1999 wildfires, both sparked by lightning strikes.
Covington is located in the north-western section of the park, between Black Rock Canyon and Joshua Tree. Take La Contenta south off of Highway 62.
There are abandoned tracks leading up the side of a mountain near the Lower Covington Flats. There are multiple pieces of track, posts, electrical wire, and other miscellaneous parts. This gold operation has likely been abandoned since the 1930s or 1940s.
