Gjábakkahellir Lava Tube, Iceland (UNESCO site)
View Original Description
Gjábakkahellir is a 360 meter long lava tube located in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Þingvellir National Park and is best visited in the summer months. Enter Gjábakkahellir and discover the marvels that volcanic activity has created about 9,000 years ago; the cave is a perfect example of an Icelandic lava tube and is situated in one of the most active volcano areas in the world due to the riffs that enabled lava to surface ages ago.
For safety reasons, different caves are explored during different seasons. The most commonly visited caves are the Gjábakkahellir Cave near Þingvellir National Park in the summer months, and the Leiðarendi Cave in the Bláfjöll area in wintertime.
The tube is open in both directions, so it is easy to walk through it.
It is easily accessible as there is only 50 meter walk from the road to the opening of the cave.
In the winter Leiðarendi cave can be explored.
