Hike to
Heart Lake Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
View Original Description
Heart Lake Geyser Basin is a small isolated basin that is mostly pools and vents of many different colors and forms, but also several geysers. The main features are Rustic Geyser and Columbia Pool, located at the far side of the basin beneath the reddish slopes of Mount Sheridan, and 7.5 miles from the nearest highway (the Grand Loop Road between the South Entrance and Grant Village). Columbia Pool has wide, elaborate sinter edges or shelves.
Logs, believed to have been placed around the vent of Rustic Geyser by Indians or early explorers, are still detectable under a layer of sinter. Columbia Pool has wide, elaborate sinter edges or shelves.
The basin may be reached by a 5.5 mile trail that passes through lodgepole pine forest for the first four miles then follows the valley of Witch Creek for 2.5 miles until you reach the first pools.
