Explore Kiholo State Park Reserve (Kiholo Bay), Big Island, Hawaii

Kiholo State Park Reserve is located on a beautiful bay with stark, lava-covered coastal park with small bays, sparsely vegetated coastline, historic lava flows, and wide open spaces. There are miles of black sand to lounge on, often in total privacy. Private property surrounds the bay - do not trespass. Most of the bay is surrounded by private property but there is public access to the water. Directions: Take Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway (Hwy 19) north from Kailua-Kona or South from Kohala. The public access road is on the makai (ocean) side of the highway between Mile Marker #82 and 83. There is no sign on the highway indicating the turn-off, only a dirt pull-off with an access gate set back from the highway. GATES ARE LOCKED NIGHTLY. When entrance gates are locked for the night, vehicles will not be able to enter or leave the park. Hours: Summer: April 1 to Labor Day: 7 am to 7 pm Winter: After Labor Day to March 31: 7 am to 6 pm Camping: Camping is allowed for a fee on weekends only (Friday through Sunday nights), and sites may be reserved up to 30 days in advance of check-in. Permits required. The area is under park reserve status and still undergoing conceptual planning for future public use.
