Magma Chamber of Þríhnúkagígur Volcano, Iceland
View Original Description
Thrihnukagigur Volcano (Three Peaks Crater) in Iceland has been dormant for 4,000 years. The magma mysteriously drained away a hugh bottle-shaped volcanic vault, measuring 50×70 m (160×220 ft) at the bottom. A passages continue down to to a total depth of about 200 m (700 ft).
Hike across lava fields to a cable car where visitors are taken 390 feet into the volcano's empty magma chamber. Tours usually occur between June and July, but can be extended beyond that period.
It is located about 20 km (13 miles) southeast of Reykjavík within Bláfjöll Country Park.
