Ore of the Alps Geopark, Austria
View Original Description
Ore of the Alps (Erz der Alpen) is an UNESCO Geopark in Austria. Mining for copper actually began in Pongau all the way back in the Bronze Age – traces of those prehistoric workers can still be found in the Arthurstollen mine. The UNESCO Geopark “Ore of the Alps” offers a wide diversity of geology, nature, culture, wellness, culinary experiences and memorable moments. The copper ore of the Mitterberg - Mühlbach region was mined since prehistoric times. The so called “Tauerngold” (gold of the high mountain range “Hohe Tauern”) of the Gastein valley was the most important mineral resource of the Middle Ages.
