Hike
Saklıkent Canyon, Turkey
View Original Description
Saklıkent Canyon is cut into slopes of the Akdağlar Mountains in Turkey's Muğla province, 50 km from Fethiye. The canyon is 300 meters deep and 18 km long, one of the deepest in the world, resulting from the abrasion of the rocks by flowing waters over thousands of years.
At the mouth of the gorge, there is a wooden boardwalk above the river.
Summer is the best time to visit as the canyon is cool and shady with cold water. As the level of water rises during winter months, visitors can enter the canyon only in the summer. Four kilometers of the canyon are walkable after April, when most of the snow in the Taurus Mountains has melted and passed through on its way to the Mediterranean Sea.
The gorge is open from the April 1 to September 30. The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon to avoid tour groups in the high season (mid-summer).
WARNING: Slot canyons are particularly dangerous due to the risk of flash floods. Storms far away can send walls of water down the narrow canyons and hikers have been killed in such events. In many slot canyons, it can be miles before a safe exit or rescue is possible. Hikers should check conditions carefully and not rely on seeing the sky to judge the weather. If there is even a slight chance of rain, do not enter slot canyons.
