Salina Turda (Turda Salt Mine), Romania
View Original Description
Salina Turda is a salt mine situated in Turda, Transylvania, Romania. Salt was first extracted here during the antiquity and the mine continuously produced table salt from the Middle Ages (the mine being first mentioned in 1075) to the early 20th century (1932).
Since 1992, Salina Turda has been a halotherapy center and a popular tourist attraction. At 200 meters (650 feet) underground is a salt lake where you can take boat rides. There are also playgrounds for kids and other attractions for adults.
One of the most impressing thing in the mine is the "inner chamber", a huge, deep hall drilled within the center of the mine.
Inside the salt mine the temperature remains constant at a 10–12 °C (50–54 °F) all the time, at any time of the year. Humidity in the air remains constant, too, at about 75-80%.
