See The Blue Room Cave (Waikapalae Wet Cave), Kauai, Hawaii

Explore “The Blue Room” cave (Waikapalae cave) on Kauai’s North Shore. This wet cave is located just before the of the road on the north shore of Kauai. Like the Blue Grotto on Capri in Italy, sunlight shins through the clear water to create a blue light in the cave. You will need to enter the cave in order to experience the Blue Room. The higher the water level, the better the lighting effect. Unfortunately the water levels have been pretty low recently. The water in these wet caves is fed by springs seeping through the porous lava and is extremely cold. The best time to visit the cave is when the sun is just north of Haena, giving the cave a blue glow from the light reflecting off the bottom of the cave. To get to the cave, park in the lot of the ocean side of the highway just before the end of the road at Ke’e (about 2/10 of a mile past Limahuli Garden). Look for a trail on the other side of the road that leads up to the cave. Warning: there is a notice saying no swimming due to the possibility of exposure to leptospirosis bacteria since the cave is fresh water. Wear good shoe on the hike since it can be slippery.
