Ustyurt Plateau, Uzbekistan & Kazakhstan
View Original Description
The Ustyurt Plateau is a clay and stony desert in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, between the Aral Sea and the Caspian Sea. There are areas of sandy desert. The Ustyurt is often called the boundary separating Europe from Asia. The flat desert terrain is broken by chalk deposits that create a surreal landscape.
It has an area of about 77,000 square miles (about 200,000 square km) and an average elevation of about 500 feet (about 150 m) with an average elevation of 500 feet (150 meters) (maximum of 1,200 feet (365 m) in the southwest), and consists primarily of stony desert. The plateau’s semi-nomadic population raises sheep, goats, and camels.
The best time to be here is during sunrises and sunsets where the hills light up with color.
