Virgin Islands National Park, USVI
View Original Description
Among the attractions that makes St. John a worthy destination is the Virgin Islands National Park. This US National Park is renowned throughout the world for its breathtaking beauty while covering two-thirds of the island. The park claims some of the most beautiful coral reefs, plant life and brilliantly decorated tropical fish in the Caribbean. More than a third of the area that makes up the national park is underwater presenting unique opportunities for diving and snorkeling that may be unmatched for accessibility and dependability. Thanks to the US Park Service, St. John has sustained its vast stretches of verdant hillsides and oft-photographed, pristine white-sand beaches. Virgin Islands National Park is home to hundreds of historic structures that include plantations, factories, fortifications, schools and numerous home sites that were inhabited by workers previously enslaved on the island. The waters of Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument and Virgin Islands National Park are believed harbor the remains of some of the 28 ships known to have wrecked in the vicinity of St. John between 1713 and 1916.
Seemingly, every bay on the island is worth a trip into the water. The promise of a variety of fish, coral reefs, tidal pool marine life and seabirds beckons. The National Park Service provides instruction and guides for beginners and advance snorkelers and divers. St. John also has many outfitters that provide guided tours both in the bays and to more outbound locations utilizing their boats to access the current hot spots for the best snorkeling and diving. Visitors can explore the seascapes by snorkeling and diving among more than 400 reef fish species.
