Hike West Canyon, Lake Powell

West Canyon is locted on Lake Powell in Utah on the edge of Navajo Mountain. A small year-round stream has carved a tight slot canyon here that has created one of the classic canyoneering treks in southern Utah. A boat is required to get to the hiking part of West Canyon. West Canyon is noted for a large number of short waterfalls. The hike requires hikers to scramble, wade and swim. The lower part is challenging but not technical but it gets more difficult the hike goes on. West Canyon is about 25 miles uplake from the dam. It is best accessed from Wahweap or Antelope Point marina. WARNING: Slot canyons are particularly dangerous due to the risk of flash floods. Storms far away can send walls of water down the narrow canyons and hikers have been killed in such events. In many slot canyons, it can be miles before a safe exit or rescue is possible. Hikers should check conditions carefully and not rely on seeing the sky to judge the weather. If there is even a slight chance of rain, do not enter slot canyons.
