White Pocket, Arizona
View Original Description
White Pocket is located on the Paria Plateau in Northern Arizona in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. Visit this area if you can't get a permit to visit The Wave. It can only be reached by four-wheel-drive car.
Once there, visitors encounter towering coral pink sand dunes. Beautiful colors of red, gold and white swirling in unique rock formations.
It's about 2.5 hours from Kanab, about 40 minutes on Highway 89 to the Houserock Valley Road, 20 minutes to the Wirepass Trailhead, and then another 1.5 hours to get to White Pocket.
To access White Pocket take Paw Hole Road (BLM 1079) near the soutern part of House Rock Valley Road. From the north take House Rock Valley Road 16.5 miles to Paw Hole Road (BLM 1079) and turn left. If coming from the south at 89A take House Rock Road 13.2 miles north to Paw Hole Road (BLM 1079). It's 5.4 miles to Poverty Flat, which is the turn offs to Cottonwood Cove and White Pocket. High clearance 4WD required.
Photo tip: The “golden hour”, such as the time close to sunrise and sunset, almost always offers the best light for photography and this is especially true in the Vermilion Cliffs and other areas of the Colorado Plateau. Here the rock colors come alive with vibrant reds, oranges and golds with low sun angles, but become washed out during the mid-day. Photographing with sidelight (camera pointed 90 degrees from the sun) will ensure that you have more texture and three dimensional qualities to your images.
