Wonderland of Rocks, Joshua Tree National Park, California
View Original Description
The Wonderland of Rocks is a backcountry area in the north central portion of Joshua Tree National Park. Wonderland of Rocks is much less-traveled than the adjacent Hidden Valley, but absolutely stunning and perfect for both rock climbers and hikers.
The 12 square miles of massive jumbled granite is a maze of stone hides groves, trackless washes and several small pools of water. One way to explore a little more of the Wonderland of Rocks is to pick up the Wonderland Ranch Wash Trail to the Astrodomes--steep rocks that tower 300 feet above the wash.
Some of the formations include The Super Dome, Freak Brothers Domes, Disneyland Dome, Eagle in Flight and 3 Sisters.
There are no establish trails through this area but there are two very good trails that skirt the Wonderland including Barker Dam and the Boy Scout trails. Also from Indian Cove Campground.
Common sense dictates that you exit the Wonderland of Rocks before nightfall; it’s also a Park Service regulation, designed to allow the shy bighorn sheep a chance to reach water without human interference.
