At Germany's invasion of Norway on the 9th of April 1940, Ålesund was not immediately occupied. While the initial fighting in Norway lasted for two months, Ålesund became a point of resistance and was bombed by the Nazis at the end of April. The town was eventually occupied, but it became known as "Little London" due to the resistance work that continued there.
