Frank Fox Gravesite, Carrizo Creek, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California
View Original Description
Frank Fox and his brother Will were horse thieves that had joined a cattle drive. Frank Fox, a 15 year old outlaw, was killed while attempting to escape by Deputy Sheriff Slankert of Cochise County, Arizona on April 1, 1890 near Carriso Creek. He was shot in the back. Will was arrested and put in the Yuma Territorial Prison. Frank was buried where he fell, in the desert along Carizzo Creek, near the old Butterfield Overland Mail station.
Before leaving Carrizo, the cowboys wrapped the younger Fox boy in a blanket and buried him where he fell under a pile of stones. Later someone set up a tall stone, and carved into it: “Frank Fox killed April 1 1890 age 15”. That fi rst stone seems to have disappeared between 1911 and 1924. Sometime before 1939, a new one was carved into a slab of soft stone that read: “Frank Fox, killed 1882”. A new black marble monument was placed at the site.
It's on a bluff east of the Graves Ranch and west of the Carriso Creek stagecoach station.
