Fly Fish at Rio Grande River, Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, Argentina

The Rio Grande River that is on Argentina’s side of the island they share with Chile, Isla del Tierra del Fuego , flows for 70 kilometers from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. Non-native Chilean Brown Trout were planted in the river in the 1930’s and continue an annual migration from the river to the ocean that involves great numbers of the fish, referred to as Sea Run Browns. Fly fishing for these adult fish that can range in weight from 2 to 10 kilograms or greater requires a local adaptation to insure success. Local guides are expert at providing just the right instruction to provide for the likelihood of daily catches in the range of 3 to 6 fish. Lodges and adventure companies that operate along the banks of the Rio Grande maintain a strict catch and release policy to insure the survival of the species. The prime season for Fly Fishing in Tierra del Fuego is from mid-February to mid-March, however, successful ventures can be equally anticipated throughout the entire season which runs from December to April. Guides and Fishing Lodges offer single or multi-day excursions and can provide all the gear and local knowledge needed as different set-ups for rods, line and flies are required dependent upon river conditions. Adventure seekers visiting Tierra del Fuego typically fly into Buenos Aires and then hop to either Rio Grande or Ushuaia regional airports on the island. Fishing lodge operators will arrange transportation from the local airports. Local cuisine which includes traditional “Asado” (Argentinian Barbecue) is a foodies delight and accommodations run the entire spectrum. Your dream of a Fly Fishing experience that is perhaps like none other in the world may be fulfilled by adding a trip to Fly Fish at Rio Grande River in Tierra del Fuego on your list.
