No visit to Damascus is complete without visiting a mosque and there are many from which to choose. One of the more popular mosques to see is the Umayyad Mosque (aka Grand Mosque of Damascus).
Constructed in the early 8th century it is one of the largest mosques in the world. It has been considered a holy place for thousands of year, so be respectful when visiting. The great Muslim leader Saladin is buried outside the courtyard and St. John the Baptist’s is said to be in a shrine inside the mosque.
As old as Damascus may be it embraces present day Arabian culture. In 2008, it was the Arab Capital of Culture. This is an UNESCO initiative designed to promote and celebrate Arab culture.
