Golf on
Lanai Island, Hawaii
View Original Description
The Hawaiian Island of Lanai has seen development of its tourism industry take place while its sugarcane and pineapple fields were phased out late in the 20thcentury. The island opened up to visitors beginning in 1990 with the development of the first of 2 luxury resorts on the sparsely populated island. The least developed of the Hawaiian Islands where tourists are welcome; Lanai has no traffic lights or shopping malls. In addition to the 2 resorts there is only one small hotel that was originally used by visiting employees of the agricultural companies that previously dominated life on the island.
Lanai is home to 2 world class golf courses. The Challenge at Manele, a championship course designed by Jack Nicklaus, spans ancient lava fields along the rugged coastline with unmatched ocean panoramas on every hole. Shot values on the Challenge at Manele are at a premium requiring forced carries over gaping ravines with the angry ocean churning below on a number of holes. 5 options for tee boxes insures that all levels of golfing skill will be rewarded with an enjoyable experience while testing every club in a golfer’s bag.
The Experience at Koele and its 18 holes of championship golf is the product of golfing great Greg Norman’s collaboration with Mother Nature in the design of an epic golf course that seems the antithesis of all things Hawaii (except for the views). The Experience at Koele is situated high up on the slope of the volcano that formed the island and winds its way through dense forests of Eucalyptus, rare Koa, native Kiawe and Norfolk Pines sporting waterfalls and verdant valleys all the while presenting unmatched vistas of Maui and Molokai in the distance.
The resort hotels on Lanai offer luxurious accommodations in either a beachside setting or high up on the slopes of the single mountain with gourmet restaurants and world class spas. The Lanai City’s lone hotel provides basic accommodations as a more affordable alternative. Shuttle service between all three properties, the golf courses and Ferry terminal provides transportation for most of the visitors to the island. A day trip to experience either or both of the golfing jewels is available to visitors spending time on the island of Maui. From the nearby island of Maui golfers can enjoy both world class Lanai courses by making a reservation on the ferry that runs between the 2 islands and scheduling tee times at each of the courses before returning to Maui the same day or perhaps making the trip twice.
Your dream of golfing on some of the great courses in the State of Hawaii may not be complete without including the championship caliber courses on Lanai. Add these 2 gems to your list and start planning how you can experience the thrill of playing on these gorgeous tracks in conjunction with your trip to Lanai or Maui.
