Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Australia
View Original Description
Royal Melbourne Golf Club is the oldest continuously operated golf club in Australia. The club has existed since 1891 having been formed by a group of locals, many with Scottish ancestry. Royal Melbourne Golf Club had previously been located at 2 different sites in Melbourne, Victoria before the current West Course was designed by Dr. Alistair MacKenzie, A Scot, whose designs have grown to be revered throughout the golfing world (including the famous Augusta National Golf Club where the Masters is contested counted among his accomplishments). Dr. MacKenzie’s layout was accepted by the membership in 1926. A few years later, the East Course was commissioned. Both layouts have stood the test of time and beckon golfers from the far corners of the globe to test their skills on the parkland styled courses built upon the Sandhills of Melbourne. The courses are arguably the best in Australia if not the Southern Hemisphere and among the top rated courses in the world with lightning fast greens, memorable bunkering and fairways carved between thick forests.
The Royal Melbourne Golf Club has hosted many Australian National Open Championships, the Canada Cup (later dubbed the World Cup), numerous other important professional golf tournaments in addition hosting to the President’s Cup the first time this prestigious competition was staged outside the United State.
