Help Build a
Habitat for Humanity House
View Original Description
Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate sub-standard housing and homelessness throughout the world. With the use of volunteer labor they rehabilitate and build simple, decent houses alongside their partner families. The homes are not “given” to their partner families but require the investment of hundreds of hours of labor and are then sold at no profit to the partner families through the use of affordable, low cost loans. The funds generated from the monthly payments are then used to finance additional Habitat houses.
The program is administered through community level Habitat for Humanity offices operating worldwide in dozens of countries and all 50 states of theUnited States. Through the community level offices the organization is able to locally administer fund raising, building site selection, partner family selection, house construction and service the loans.
Volunteer opportunities are available for those with a construction background or no training whatsoever, just a willingness to pitch in and help. Special programs are available that expressly support women interested in developing their construction skills while building Habitat houses alongside other women. Besides the Habitat offices in local communities that are seeking volunteer labor, the organization has developed a program they refer to as the “Global Volunteer”.
Global Volunteer teams travel to interesting destinations throughout the world to work alongside members of the host community building decent, affordable houses. They welcome anyone who desires to make a difference and is willing to pick up a hammer and assist them in changing people’s lives. The Global Volunteer program provides opportunities for participating in local cultural activities in addition to the time spent building, renovating or participating in local disaster relief efforts. Recently, the Global Volunteer program has recruited volunteers for ventures in Haiti, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Romania, Sri-Lanka and Bolivia.
If you have dreamed of making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate then a commitment to Habitat for Humanity to assist in their efforts to provide decent, affordable housing may be just the opportunity for you. You can investigate the location of your choice and start making plans to participate as soon as you add it to your list.
