Over 100 years ago, the south shore of Devil’s Lake (just below you) looked much different than it does today.European immigrants and settlers took note of the lake in the mid-1800s, and with the routing of a rail line through the lake valley, tourism began booming.The first of several hotels was built in 1866 and the railroad was completed in 1873 with a stop at Devil’s Lake on the south shore. The hotels and train station are now gone, andyou’ll also notice that cleared, open areas once used for agriculture have been filled in by hardwoods and conifers.
