Hike
Bowl of Fire Trail, Nevada
View Original Description
Not to be confused with Valley of Fire State Park, the Bowl of Fire is a less-visited area strewn with brightly colored red, pink and orange Aztec sandstone formations. This is a great place to wander about, rather than stay on the trail. If you get lost, hike down any wash (go downhill) and you will come out where you went in.
Distance: Roughly six miles round-trip (or as long as you’d like to wander around!)
How to Get There:
From Las Vegas, take U.S. Highway 93/95 south to Lake Mead Drive. Go east on state Route 146 for about 10 miles to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area's entrance station. Then drive three-tenths of a mile and go left onto Northshore Road. Follow that for 18.2 miles. Just after mile marker 18, look for a parking pullout on the left side of the road, which serves as the trailhead. From the parking area, head northwest toward the prominent limestone ridge. Once around this small formation, you will be able to see the red rock sandstone outcropping--the Bowl of Fire--which will be your destination.
