Hike
Hancock Gorge, Karijini National Park, Western Australia
View Original Description
Hike the 1.5 kilometres, 3-hour return walk to the 'centre of the Earth' down this steep, narrow gorge. After climbing down a ladder, walk deep into the gorge through narrow chambers and past beautiful rock pools.
The hike is over uneven and difficult sections on the way to Kermit's Pool. Feel the highly polished rock on the way down to Kermit's Pool.
WARNING: Do not climb high along the narrow ledges as this is where falls are likely and injuries can be serious. Slot canyons are particularly dangerous due to the risk of flash floods. Storms far away can send walls of water down the narrow canyons and hikers have been killed in such events. In many slot canyons, it can be miles before a safe exit or rescue is possible. Hikers should check conditions carefully and not rely on seeing the sky to judge the weather. If there is even a slight chance of rain, do not enter slot canyons.
