“The beautiful lake views along this trail combined with Hoover Dam history make it one of Southern Nevada’s most unique trail experiences.” Designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2015, the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail offers spectacular views of the lake, a bit of Hoover Dam history, and sometimes almost pitch-black darkness inside its historic tunnels. Nine steam and four gas locomotives traveled this line, and it is the only remaining section of Hoover Dam Railroad that is not highly disturbed or underwater. If you’re a Clint Eastwood fan, you might recognize this trail from the motorcycle / helicopter chase scene in the movie, “The Gauntlet.” But don’t worry. This trail isn’t a gauntlet. It’s actually pretty easy. Access: The Historic Railroad Trail is easily accessed near either the Alan Bible Visitor Center or via the Hoover Dam parking garage. It is an easy hike and offers great panoramic views of Lake Mead, Boulder Basin, and Fortification Hill. It is 3.7 miles from trailhead to Hoover Dam Parking Garage (7.4 miles round trip).
