Hike or Rock Climb
Keyhole Canyon, Nevada
View Original Description
This is a fun place to rock climb or spend a memorable day looking at rock art. There are hundreds of petroglyphs adorning the walls of this canyon! Most of them are geometric symbols rather than representations of physical things, but a few petroglyphs depict bighorn sheep, lizards and humans. Most of the time, petroglyphs are fairly close to the ground, but here they are unusual because many are high up on the cliffs. Some are believed to be more than 1000 years old...
How to Get There:
To get to Keyhole Canyon from Las Vegas, take Hwy US 95 south through Henderson toward Boulder City. From the junction of Hwys 93 and 95, head south on 95 toward Searchlight for 15.5 miles. At an intersection, take a left (east) onto an unmarked dirt road. (The road goes through the barbwire fence at a white cattle guard with a "designated roadway" sign.) Follow this dirt road for just over 2 miles to a series of power lines. Take a right (south) on the SECOND power line road, then travel almost 2 miles to the Keyhole Cutoff. Take a left (east) and head less than a half-mile to the mouth of the canyon.
