The Kīlauea Iki Trail in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is 4 mile (6.4 km) loop that 2 to 3 hours. The starts in the very lush vegetation rain forest on the crater's rim and descends 400 feet through a series of switch backs in the rain forest to the crater floor. Hikers will cross the crater floor seeing steam coming up out of the cracks. The trail passes the gaping throat of the vent that built Pu'u Pua'i cinder cone, and return to your starting point via the crater's rim. Scenery includes panoramic views of Kīlauea caldera, Mauna Loa (on clear days) and native forest with tall tree ferns. If you found parking at Kīlauea Visitor Center? Stay put and hike the scenic Crater Rim Trail towards Kūpinaʻi Pali (Waldron Ledge) to access Kīlauea Iki Trail, 5.3 miles (8.5 km) round trip.Be prepared and bring water, food, hat, sunscreen and rain gear. Be prepared for hot, dry, wet, windy weather conditions and steep rocky terrain. Fill your water bottles outside the visitor center.Donʻt stack rocks. Park rangers stack rocks (ahu) with purpose to mark trails and prevent visitors from getting lost.
