Hike/Canyoneer
Leprechaun Canyon, North Wash, Utah
View Original Description
Leprechaun Canyon is located in the North Wash section of Utah. The first part of the canyon before the fork is nice for a casual slot canyon hike but then narrows even more which will require canyoneering skills. As you get towards the junction where the east and forks come in, the canyon will narrow down and form subway like sections, make sure to bring your camera.
The second part of the canyon will require 3 rappels and some tight fits in the narrow sections. East Fork of Leprechaun is rated 3AII, with rappels up to 52 ft with the remaining ones less than about 40 ft.
The East Fork is 4.5 miles long and will take 3-5 hours.
North Wash is located off of Highway 95, south of Hanksville, UT and north of the Hite Marina on Lake Powell.
WARNING: Slot canyons are particularly dangerous due to the risk of flash floods. Storms far away can send walls of water down the narrow canyons and hikers have been killed in such events. In many slot canyons, it can be miles before a safe exit or rescue is possible. Hikers should check conditions carefully and not rely on seeing the sky to judge the weather. If there is even a slight chance of rain, do not enter slot canyons.
