Hike Lake Poway to Potato Chip Rock (Mt Woodson), San Diego, California

Mt Woodson is a boulder covered mountain in eastern San Diego, California with a unique rock formation at the top called Potato Chip Rock. There are several trails to the top of Mt Woodson. The Mt. Woodson Trail via Lake Poway on the western side of the mountain is a 7.5 mile out and back trail that offers breathtaking vistas of San Diego County. This hike is rated as moderately to difficult strenuous, but with a view at the top that is worth all the effort. The trail is well-maintained, but narrow in places. Although the hike can be completed year-round, the heat can be fairly extreme during the summer months so stick to early mornings and late afternoons. Remember to bring plenty of water and keep an eye out for rattlesnakes. You can also hike up the service road from State Route 67 on the eastern side of the mountain. Dogs are allowed.
