Hike Nugget Falls Trail, Alaska

The Nugget Falls Trail is 0.8 miles long. It begins half way down Photo Point Trail and ends at Nugget Falls, skirting the flats at the edge of Mendenhall Lake. It is a low gradient trail that was completed in 2010. The new construction realigned the trail so the tread is above high water on the lake. The trail follows the shore line of Mendenhall Lake. Views of the glacier are present along most of the trail. The trail ends at Nugget Falls, a dramatic set of falls with all the noise and spray to go along with the scene. Arctic Terns nest around the lake in the summer. Goat can be spotted with binoculars on the mountains around the glacier. Black bears are seen occasionally in the area. Keep food secure so bears don't get the idea they can come to the campground for meals. From downtown Juneau, travel north on Egan Drive to Mendenhall Loop Road. Turn right and continue straight ahead to the end of the road, which will be come Glacier Spur Road after Mendenhall Loop Road turns off to the left. Walk down the paved path to the Visitor Center out toward Photo Point. Take the trail to the right just past the Visitor Center that will go over an elevated pathway through a rock gorge. The trail will continue on to Nugget Falls.
