Hike Oak Flat Loop Trail, Gunnison National Park, Colorado

Hiking Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado provides myriad opportunities and experiences. The Oak Flat Loop Trail is a moderate to strenuous 2 mile round trip hike below the canyon’s south rim. It’s ideal for hikers that want to explore below the rim but aren’t interested in trekking all the way to the namesake river. The trail is narrow in spots and encompasses some pretty steep slopes. The Oak Flat Loop Trail begins near the Visitor Center located just 7 miles from the interstate highway where visitors can learn about the canyon and its genesis. Hikers quickly encounter amazing views on the trail of Black Canyon descending through a grove of aspens and oaks to a sign-posted junction before continuing on the Oak Flat Loop. The trail then meanders through a thicket of oak scrub before it passes near a rock outcropping that provides spectacular views downstream; a nice spot to rest and enjoy the panorama. The trail then directs hikers west where it begins its ascent through a forest of Douglas Fir, Aspen and Gambel Oak. On the return leg hikers reach another overlook with its own impressive vista.
