Hike on
Oahu, Hawaii
View Original Description
Hiking is a very popular activity on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. Although Hawaii’s most densely populated island, plenty of open space and natural wilderness provides virtually unlimited opportunities for hikers to pursue their passion between visits to iconic beaches and bustling beachside communities.
One of the most popular hikes on Oahu is the trek to the top of the Diamond Head Crater (Leahi) landmark. The trailhead is just minutes from Waikiki with 2 sets of stairs and a dark tunnel that leads trekkers past old military bunkers on their way to the highest point of the dormant volcano that provides expansive views of the Pacific and over the cityscapes of Waikiki and Honolulu. The path is incredibly popular and best hiked in the early morning so as to avoid the crowds.
On the far western tip of the island, in mostly undeveloped territory, lies a dramatic shoreline of volcanic rock known as Kaena Point. The location holds a revered place in Hawaiian culture and is reachable only by hiking from 2 separate trailheads; one is located in Kaena State Park with the other at the end of the Farrington Highway. The hike is long and fully exposed requiring a relatively good level of fitness and frequent application of sunscreen. Incredible scenic views await those hikers challenging the trails.
Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail is a moderately easy hike that provides expansive views of the deep blue Pacific Ocean along the route to an over 100 year old beacon shining from a 600 foot (180 meters) cliff on the most eastern shore of Oahu. Whale watching at the end of the trail is possible during the winter months. Nearby islets provide sanctuary for indigenous bird species that may be observed from the trail.
The Aiea Loop Trail in Central Oahu provides an escape from city life in the towering peaks and tropical jungle of the Koolau Mountains with expansive views of the Halawa Valley along with vistas that include the southern coastline of the island from Pearl Harbor to Honolulu and across to Diamond Head crater.
This approximately 5 mile (8 km) route is considered to be moderately easy with some switchbacks and a stream crossing. Among other worthy considerations for hiking on Oahu are the Waahila Ridge Trail (challenging) and the Nakoa Trail near the North Shore along with many other trails including some that visit waterfalls and stream fed swimming holes.
