Hike or Mountain Bike Paparoa Track and Pike29 Memorial Track, Paparoa National Park, New Zealand

The Paparoa Track is a 55.7 km (34.6 mi) shared hiking and mountain biking track located in Paparoa National Park in the South Island of New Zealand. The track was created as a memorial for the 29 miners who lost lives in the Pike River Mine disaster. The track opened in 2020 and is the tenth Great Walk to be created and the country’s first new Great Walk to be completed in 25 years The Pike29 Memorial Track is an additional 10.8 km (6.7 mi) track which leads from the Paparoa Track to the Pike River Mine Portal. At the mine there will be a memorial and interpretation centre. There are three Great Walk huts on the Paparoa Track: Ces Clark Hut (16 bunks), Moonlight Tops Hut (20 bunks) and Pororari Hut (20 Hut). Huts have bunks, mattresses, heating, gas cooktops, toilets, and a water supply. A DOC ranger may be present. The huts do not provide food, cooking utensils or showers. Backcountry Hut Passes can be used at Ces Clark Hut but not at Moonlight Tops or Pororari huts. There are no campsites on the track. You'll need accommodation the night before your walk - camping at Smoke-ho car park is not permitted. Track route (hiking): Smoke-ho car park to Ces Clark Hut (4–5 hr, 10.3 km) Side trip: Garden Gully (45 min return) Ces Clark Hut to Moonlight Tops Hut (3 hr, 9.7 km) Side trip: Croesus Knob (1 hr 10 min return) Moonlight Tops Hut to Pororari Hut (5–7 hr, 19.1 km) Pororari Hut to Pororari River car park or Waikori Road car park (4–5 hr, 16 km to Pororari River car park, 17.1 km to Waikori Road carpark) Track route (mountain biking): Smoke-ho car park to Ces Clark Hut (2–3 hr, 10.3 km) Ces Clark Hut to Moonlight Tops Hut (1 hr 30 min – 2 hr 30 min, 9.7 km) Moonlight Tops Hut to Pororari Hut (4–5 hr, 19.1 km) Pororari Hut to Waikori Road car park (2 hr 30 min – 3 hr 30 min, 17. 1 km)
