Painted Canyons (Ladder Canyons) is a beautiful slot canyon hike located in Mecca Hills in the northeast corner of the Coachella Valley. This loop hike is about 4.8 miles long with an elevation gain of about 450 feet. It will take you 3-4 hours to complete the loop. This place is called the painted canyon due to the different colored rocks and mountains found here. This is a difficult hike and some people attempting this hike have to be rescued. Only attempt this hike if you're ready for it. If you are afraid of heights, tight or narrow spaces this hike might not be for you. Bring plenty of water and snacks! The Mecca Hills are located about 40 miles southeast of Palm Springs. To get there drive the last few miles on an unpaved road that should be fine in most cars. Do not leave any valuables in your car.
