Hike
Porcupine Wash/Ruby Lee Mill Site Trail, Joshua Tree National Park, California
View Original Description
Porcupine Wash Ruby Lee Mill Site Trail is a great secluded approx. 9 mile loop trail off Pinto Basin Road in Joshua Tree National Park. There are no official trails, just signs of old mining roads, and following washes.
The Ruby Lee Mill was established in 1935. A stamp mill is used to crush ore in order to extract minerals. This mill was probably used to extract gold and silver.
There are a number of mines in the vicinity. Water is needed in the milling process, and there is a nearby well, which is now dry. The milling machine is no longer present, but sat on a concrete foundation. The site has some old foundations, well, bed springs and mining equipment.
Backcountry camping is permitted in areas that are:
1 mile (1.6 km) from roads,
500 feet from trails and water sources,
not day-use only areas.
Before setting out into the backcountry, you must first register at one of the backcountry boards.
