Hike
Schynige Platte to Grindelwald First, Switzerland
View Original Description
One of the Iclassic hike in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland is the Schynige Platte-Faulhorn-First. Schynige Platte is a start point for the popular hiking trails to Faulhorn or First and end up in the town of Grindelwald, Switzerland. Scenic highlights of the trail including the notorious Eiger and its more impressive sister peak, the fearsome Shreckhorn.
The Faulhorn is a mountain located between Lake Brienz and Grindelwald. The summit is 2,681 metre high and can be reached by several trails. Since 1830, a hotel is located on the very summit.
Lake Bachalp (Bachalpsee or Bachse) is a lake with an area of 8.06 ha (19.9 acres) that is close to First. The lake, located at an elevation of 2,265 m (7,431 ft), is split by a natural dam, the smaller part of the lake being 6 m (20 ft) lower.
First is a minor summit below the Schwarzhorn. It is mostly known as a cable car station above Grindelwald.
This hike is pretty tough. It's high (From 2000m up to 2680m, then back down to 2180m), it's exposed, and long. It will take approx. 6.5 hours. Hikers might want to split into two days. Schynige Platte can be reached with a 50 minute ride uphill on the historic railway from Wilderswil and ends taking the cable car down from First to Grindelwald.
High summer is the best season, but hikable weather often extends into September, when the Europeans are back at work. The Faulhorn closes in October.
It's possible to do this in a day from Zurich but it's best to start from Interlaken or Grindelwald (you don't want to be stuck on the main having to walk down to Grindelwald due to arrive after the cable car closes).
