Hike Tall Trees Grove Trail, Redwood National Park, California

The Tall Trees Trail is a moderately strenuous hike that descends 800-feet down to the alluvial floodplain of Redwood Creek. The grove has plenty of water, good soil, and protection from winter winds and as a result has many redwood trees that exceed 350 feet (106 meters) in height. Hyperion is a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) in California considered the world's tallest known living tree, measuring 115.92m. Hyperion was discovered August 25, 2006, by naturalists Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor. The tree was verified as standing 115.55 m (379.1 ft) tall by Stephen Sillett. It was found in a remote area of Redwood National Park purchased in 1978. It is estimated to contain 530 m3(18,600 cu ft) of wood. The park also houses the second and third known tallest trees, named Helios and Icarus. Sillett estimates Hyperion to be 600 years old while others report it to be roughly 700 to 800 years old. For 16 years, the park kept the location of the tree hidden in order to protect it. They feared that too many visitors to the site could damage it and the delicate ecology of its surrounding slopes.
