Hike The Slot (Slot Canyon Trail), Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California

"The Slot" is a slot canyon incised deeply into sandstone and siltstone strata along the base of West Butte, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California. The Slot narrows to a two-foot width as you work your way "downstream." After 10 or 15 minutes of downhill meandering, the canyon walls part, and you come upon the upper end of a vehicle route through Borrego Mountain Wash. From the parking lot for the Slot, you can follow a hiking route north and northeast to the highest point on West Butte. Take 78 go east 1.3 miles past Borrego Valley Road to Buttes Pass Road (Borrego Mountain Wash) and go north. Follow this road up unitl it makes a sharp left (above 1.9 miles). Park to the right at this point. The roads are recommended only for vehicles with four-wheel drive. Note: There are several named slot canyons in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
