Red Pass marks the junction of Titanothere Canyon and Titus Canyon proper. Titanothere Canyon breaks away, southeast of Thimble Mountain while we travel up over Red Pass which marks the divide between these two canyon complexes. Titanothere is one of the Tertiary treats by the way. A Titanothere is a rhinoceros looking mammal that lived in the Tertiary about 25 million years ago. One of the first monument superintendents was digging around in this canyon and found a skeleton of one. The skeleton came from the Titus Formation which is the smooth green From Highway 374 the one-way road heads west across the Amargosa Valley and climbs into the Grapevine Mountains. At White Pass it enters upper Titanothere Canyon. Colorful rock deposits along this section contain fossil beds 30-35 million years old. The fossil skull of a huge, rhino-like titanothere was found here in 1933. Those wanting to explore the remote lower reaches of Titanothere Canyon may park where the road crosses the second fork of the drainage. Lostman Spring is a good goal about 4.5 miles down-canyon.
