Hike to Hamburger Rocks & Muley Tanks, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

Hamburger Rocks is located on the western face of the Waterpocket Fold in southern Capitol Reef National Park. A red layer of silty sandstone in the upper Navajo Sandstone (probably stream floodplain deposits) stands out in contrast to white sandstone (dune sand deposits) that makes up make up most of the formation. The hike begins at Brimhall Trailhead at Halls Creek Overlook. The hike is 9 miles (14.5 km) roundtrip with an elevation gain of 800 feet (243.8 m). Another option is hiking12 miles roundtrip from The Post. Water can usually be found at the Muley Tanks, about 200 yards (183 m) north of Hamburger Rocks, but would need to be purified. This route is not an official, maintained trail. Route conditions, including obstacles in canyons, change frequently due to weather, flash floods, rockfall, and other hazards.
