Hike Trail Pass to PCT, Horseshoe Meadow, California

"Trail Pass" provides access to the Pacific Crest Trail going South and the northeastern portion of Golden Trout Wilderness. Small streams meander through tree-rimmed meadows in this wilderness area, which is named for California's state fish. This trail is popular with horseback riders because the trail is gener-ally well-maintained and has a gentle grade. Download area map for trail names. 9,940 ft. at trailhead. - 10,490 ft.at Trail Pass Located at the end of Horseshoe Meadow Road, 24 miles southwest of the town of Lone Pine, California. From center of Lone Pine, turn west at the stoplight and follow Whitney Portal Road for 3 miles. Then turn south onto Horseshoe Meadow Road. Follow Horseshoe Meadow Road to its end. Horseshoe Meadow Road is usually open from late May to October. It is closed in winter due to snow. The trail is relatively snow free from approximately June to October. For the rest of the year, snow may cover some or all of the trail. Permits are required for overnight trips. Obtain permits at Inyo National Forest Visitor Centers. From the last Saturday in May to September 15, use is limited by daily entry quotas. Permits for this period may be reserved up to six months in advance at www.recreation.gov.
