View Original Description
In the highlands of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur not far from the town of Sisteron in the village of Le Caire (Cairo) is found the increasingly popular via Ferrata de la Grande Fistoire. Relatively new on the tour of Europe’s via Ferratas this track has been operating only since 1996. The route requires about 4 hours to complete with multiple bridges, expanses of steel cable and permanent steps aiding the hikers endeavoring to reach the summit 300 meters above the trailhead affording expansive picturesque views of the valley below.
Even those not equipped but willing to give the la Grande Fistoire via Ferrata a go will find equipment available to rent on-site that includes helmets, harnesses and sophisticated lanyards. Three “zip lines” are found near the via Ferrata providing alternative adventures for those visiting this region of the scenic French Alps. A small admission charge is mandatory for those wishing to access the via Ferrata.
About an hour’s drive from Marseille, Le Caire is a small town in the alpine region of France. Nearby Sisteron is a 4,000 year old town situated near the confluence of the Buech and Sasse rivers where it creates the River Durance. Sisteron is nicknamed “The Gateway to Provence” and easily accessible from Marseilles, Nice and Grenoble.

A good pair of hiking shoes and rental of all the equipment you may need on-site will allow your introduction to this extreme sport that is growing in popularity.
