Hike Wolverine Canyon (Wolverine Petrified Wood Natural Area), Utah

Wolverine Canyon is a moderately easy canyon hike in Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The area is noted for its petrified wood. (Collecting is not permitted). The Wolverine Natural Area is located near the mouth of Wolverine Canyon and offers a good look at some interesting specimens with a fairly short, easy hike. The lower portion of the canyon has beautiful honeycombed walls. It's a 5 miles one-way to Horse Canyon. For a loop, hike 5 miles down Wolverine to Horse Canyon then 9 miles up Horse Canyon to the Wolverine Loop Road, and then 4 miles (right, south) via the road to the trail head for the total of approximately 18 miles. Note: Backpackers should avoid looping back through Little Death Hollow as they may have trouble getting their packs past obstacles and through the slot section. The trailhead is located off Wolverine Loop Road (110) approximately 11 miles to the signed trail head parking area. Water is scarce. Plan on carrying all the water you will need.
