Sea Kayak Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand

Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand's smallest national park and is located at the north end of the South Island. The park has vast tidal inlets, deserted golden bays and weathered coastline. At the park you will see seals, native birds, scallop shells and native flora. The Park is renowned for its spectacular scenery and temperate climate. The rocky sculptural shapes of the shoreline and the sparkling sands are results of the erosion of structural granite. The distinctive golden colour of most beaches is due to the deposits of polished quartz crystals, more resistant to the process of erosion. Abel Tasman National Park does not extend beyond Mean High Water Mark on the adjacent coast. Between Mean High Water and Mean Low Water Springs, the beaches are gazetted as a Scenic Reserve, covering 7.74 km² in total (about 70 km long). The Tonga Island Marine Reserve adjoins part of the park.
