Taan Fjord (Tyndall Glacier), Alaska
View Original Description
Taan Fjord is located in Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve and exits into Icy Bay. Tyndall Glacier feeds into the fjord.
In 2015 a steep mountainside in ths remote fjord gave way and drops 200 million tons of rock into deep glacial water in 60 seconds. The displaced water generated a wave that sheared alders more than 500 feet up on a hillside across from the slide.
Unlike during the Lituya Bay tsunami -- during which three anchored boats were sunk by or rode atop a 100-foot wall of water -- no fisherman were in Taan Bay at the time of the slide.
