An official language in 29 of the world’s countries, French is the primary language in France, along with parts of Switzerland, Belgium and Canada with secondary speakers spread throughout the world. French is thought to be the second most studied language in the world, after English. The Latin roots of the French language makes it another of the world’s Romance languages. The reasons for learning the French language are as varied as the populations that use French in their everyday lives. Many words used in English have French heritage as nearly 10,000 French words were adopted into English as a result of the Norman Conquest contributing to the widely held belief that over 1/3 of English words are of French origin. French is an official working language of the United Nations, the International Red Cross and the International Olympic Committee. French is thought to be the 2nd most used language on the internet.
