Learn to Fly an Airplane

Learning to fly an airplane with the goal to obtain a Private Pilot’s License is not as difficult as it might appear. With a basic understanding of math and physics and a passion for air travel the road to freedom from commercial airlines (at least for the shorter hops) can be within the reach of almost anyone. The exact requirements for obtaining a license will vary somewhat from country to country but the basics are similar everywhere. Ground training for a Private Pilot’s License includes in-depth study in the areas of Technical Aspects of Aircraft, Meteorology, Navigation, Flight Plans, Aeronautical Law, Aircraft and Pilot Performance and Radio usage. Along with the classroom or self-study lessons a minimum number of flying hours under the direct control of a licensed Flight Instructor is also a requirement. Flight Instruction will cover such important aspects of flying as Straight and Level Flight, Take-offs and Landings, Turning, Stalling, Climbing and Descending and Emergency Procedures. Usually there are minimum age requirement and health standards as well as a prescribed number of hours in the pilot’s seat while accompanied by the instructor before the newly trained pilot is allowed to fly solo. Many flight schools offer what they refer to as “Discovery Flights” or introductory lessons that allow potential new pilots the ability to actually fly a plane under supervision with a minimum of ground school orientation. Once the curiosity is replaced with the passion to fly their own plane, the hopeful pilot will obtain their license upon completion of the mandated instruction and supervised flight hours along with the successful demonstration of lessons well-learned by passing a standardized test. The matriculation to larger aircraft requires additional study, flight hours and testing. Your desire to be free from the timetables and restrictions of commercial airline flight may be realized once you add the dream to Learn to Fly an Airplane to your bucket list. Start investigating the flight schools in your area and target a date to obtain your license. You can then plan to fly yourself to a location that will allow you to check off another item or two on your list.
