Learn to Kitesurf (Kiteboard)

Kitesurfing or Kiteboarding as it is known in certain parts of the world is an extreme sport that combines elements of surfing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, sailing, paragliding and gymnastics. Although a relatively new sport in its current form, the history of Kitesurfing can be traced to the early 1800’s. The sport has grown explosively since the mid 1990’s when the current style of equipment became commonplace. Kitesurfing will be featured in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro where it will replace windsurfing. Olympic Kitesurfing will be a course event without all the jumps and tricks associated with freestyle Kitesurfing. Speed is a hallmark of Kitesurfing with the 50 knot barrier making specially designed Kiteboards competitive with the world’s fastest sailboats and windsurfers. Specific hybrid equipment designs support the various Kitesurfing styles with enhancements possible for jumping, waveriding, freestyle and wakestyle as well as speed and course racing. Because the goal of Kitesurfing involves a good amount of speed and loss of contact with the water’s surface for extended periods of time the sport has a reputation for danger. Learning to Kitesurf under the guidance of an experienced, trained instructor is recommended to insure the learning process is as safe as possible. Kitesurfing associations throughout the world can provide access to qualified instructors. As preparation for Kitesurfing, it’s thought that a background of wakeboarding and/or snowboarding is the best foundation as the requisite balance and skills are somewhat similar. Understanding basic sailing terms and technique also makes for a solid base. Although beginners typically start out with smaller kites, the multiplication of the wind power that takes place even with the most basic of equipment makes learning under the direction of an accomplished Kitesurfer mandatory. Most qualified providers of instruction provide gear for beginners to use when they are just trying to get a feel for the sport. Your fantasy to participate in an extreme activity that combines your love of water with speed and agility could be satisfied by participating in the sport of Kitesurfing. Add the dream to Learn to Kitesurf to your list and find an appropriate instructor to safely teach you the basics. Once you become proficient you can join your fellow enthusiasts in exotic locations around the globe in their love of this exciting sport.
