Learn to Sail

Sailing is the movement of an object with the use of large pieces of fabric (“sails”) that are specially designed to catch wind and use that force of nature for propulsion. Sailing is primarily a water based activity but can be practiced on land or ice. Sailing has been a fundamental part of the development of civilizations throughout history with the earliest documented use of vessels equipped with sails as long ago as 2,500 years. While Sailing was a major component of the movement of material and people from one location to another for nearly that entire 25 centuries, today it is primarily a recreational and competitive activity as a result of the development of motorized craft. Pleasure Sailing can be as simple as maneuvering a 5 meter skiff around a sheltered bay or as challenging as a blue water sail with a massive live-aboard yacht that circumnavigates the globe. Learning to Sail requires the student to acquire a variety of skills from knowledge of basic boating, rigging, and sailing terms to an understanding of sailing techniques, rope tying, docking, anchoring, meteorology, course charting and safety.
