Learn to SCUBA Dive

Diving underwater with the aid of tanks filled with air provides a level of freedom and accessibility that opens up an entire new world to the novice diver. An huge underwater world that far surpasses the amount of terra firma on our planet contains creatures, mysteries, colors and shapes impossible to experience on land. SCUBA diving is a technical and sometimes dangerous sport and requires proper training to insure safety and full enjoyment. Learning to dive with the use of SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) gear is best pursued in a combination of study of the basic principles in a classroom or from various self-study resources along with increasingly challenging in-water experiences, beginning with supervised Confined Water Dives in pools or other closed-in bodies of water before challenging oneself with Open Water dives. Full certification may be accomplished in three or four days, as long as the requisite classroom instruction was previously completed. Certification is required in most locations to be able to rent or fill tanks or to participate in guided open-water dives. Usually novice SCUBA divers purchase their own Masks, Fins and Snorkels that are fitted to their individual requirements. Dive shops or operators can provide the other required gear on a rental basis such as Regulators, Buoyancy Control Devices, Tanks, Wetsuits and Weights along with Dive Computers that help insure against the dangers of decompression sickness. Once novice divers inevitably become “hooked” on the sport they invest in custom fitted gear that makes their diving adventures more comfortable and convenient. Advanced courses and higher level certification await those SCUBA divers that want to develop their skills in order to experience more challenging diving conditions. Prerequisites for certification include general good health and the ability to swim and tread water at a reasonable level. The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) provides certification at more than 6000 locations around the world, including Resorts and Dive Centers and is the largest provider of training for recreational SCUBA divers. The PSAI (Professional Scuba Association International) also offers certification programs along with many other providers around the world.
